Leisure Time Places

Escape Civilization on Seabrook Island

South Carolina's charming Seabrook Island seems like worlds away.

Located just 23 miles south of the bustling cultural city of Charleston, picturesque Seabrook Island is a place where locals and visitors can kick back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery.

With 2.5 miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean and another mile or so on the pretty North Edisto River, this leisure destination is the ideal location for travelers searching for a quiet, low-key beach holiday.

About the Island
Aside from the stunningly beautiful beach, the island boasts approximately 2,200 acres of dense, lush maritime forest and lots of salt marshes.

This heavily forested island is covered with trees, many of which are peculiar to the southern United States. You'll find majestic oaks, palm trees, live oaks, pines, hickories, magnolias and sweetgum trees.

A long-time participant in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary North American Bird-watching Open, Seabrook Island is home to about 80 species of birds, many of which are endangered or threatened.

Wildlife is abundant as well. Visitors will find many varieties of reptiles on the island, including turtles, alligators, chameleons, and tree frogs, as well as plenty of small mammals like the raccoon, grey squirrel, red fox, marsh rabbit, and white-tail deer. Dolphins can be spotted as well.

The Climate
Because of its southern location, Seabrook Island boasts comfortable temperatures nearly all year round. In the winter months, the average temperature is around 60 degrees, while during the warm summer months, temperatures reach into the high 80s. The average yearly temperature is a perfect 75 degrees.

The island rarely receives any snowfall and its rainiest months are July and August, with the beautiful fall months of October and November receiving the least amount of rain.

Active Pursuits on the Island
While you may be tempted to spend your days at Seabrook on the beautiful beach with a good book, there are indeed a number of other activities designed to keep you busy during your stay on the island.

Besides swimming, many watersports fans enjoy guided kayak tours of the salt marshes or even guided beach walks, where visitors learn about the inhabitants of the island's beaches (not the human ones!).

Try your hand at "ocean seining" by casting a traditional seine net into the ocean and pulling up some creatures that live in the tidal zone. Your guide will help you learn about your catch.

If land activities are your preference, you may want to climb aboard a horse for a surfside horseback ride or choose one of the island's many tennis courts for a rousing match with your partner.

Seabrook Island's two golf courses are private and are open to resort guests only. However, if you're staying at the resort, you'll want to test out these beautiful courses. Private and group instruction is available.

Kids who are guests at the on-island resort can take advantage of the daily childrens' programs there, which include a myriad of outdoor activities as well as arts and crafts, movies, and more.

Accommodations
Managed by ResortQuest, the lodging at Seabrook Island includes villas, cottages, and private homes. Most include furnishings and linens, fully-equipped kitchens, central air and heating, laundry facilities, and everything else you'll need for your home-away-from-home.

Getting There
If you're flying to Seabrook Island, you may use the Charleston International Airport, just 20 miles away and serviced by most major U.S. carriers. Car rental services are available at the airport.
