Nature Enthusiasts will Love an Oahu Hiking Vacation

Hiking in Oahu provides close-up views of some of the most stunning natural sites in the world.

Hiking enthusiasts have dubbed Hawaii's Oahu one of the best places for challenging, high-energy hiking adventure. It's easy to see why. Oahu hiking is exciting and invigorating, and, most of all, takes visitors to some of the most magnificent places on Earth.

Oahu's Distinct Geography
The beautiful Hawaiian island of Oahu was once home to two shield volcanoes. Over the centuries, these volcanoes have eroded and faded away, forming two separate mountain ranges, sometimes referred to as "volcanic spines," standing almost parallel to one another.

Geological experts note that more than one hundred ridges extend from both spines, much like nerves from a spinal cord. Hence, there are many valleys of varying depth and width along either side of the spine, making Oahu the ideal place for diverse hiking adventures.

The two spines or mountain ranges are Waianea, located on the western part of the island, and Koolau, in the east. Each provides its own unique hiking opportunities and trails that are all a little different from one another.

The Waianea Range
The Waianea Mountain Range is warmer and drier than its sister range and real Oahu hiking enthusiasts will love the steeper, narrower climbs here.

Because it's so dry and parched, you won't find lots of colorful tropical flowers along this range but rather, you'll view splendid brownish-red peaks that contrast beautifully with the bright blue sky.

The average elevation for hikers to scale amidst the peaks of the Waianea Range is about 3,000 feet but Mount Kaala, the tallest peak, climbs all the way to 4,025 feet.

The Koolau Range
The 34-mile-long Koolau Mountain Range is the recipient of most of Oahu's rain. The eastern side of the range has been constantly pummeled by winds, resulting in gorgeous carvings that are beautiful to see but should be avoided by all but the most expert hiker.

The best hiking trails in the Koolau Range are found on the west or "leeward" side, where the hiking isn't as treacherous but is nonetheless strenuous, with lots of constant up and down travel. This range is a bit lower in elevation and the vegetation is much more lush and the flora more vibrant.

Other Oahu Hiking Opportunities
Over the centuries, many smaller hills have become separated from the two mountain ranges and are, in and of themselves, a great place to hike.

Most of these trails are shorter and less steep and also lower in elevation, making them suitable for less experienced hikers. The views from the top are still magnificent!

Choosing the Right Oahu Hiking Trails for You
Oahu boasts a plethora of both public and private trails. To hike the private ones, you'll need permission from the landowner.

The state has endeavored to make the publicly owned trails safe for hiking aficionados by making them wide and keeping them free of vegetation, so it's best to stick with these trails, especially if it's the first time you've hiked here.

That doesn't necessarily mean that the trails are hazard free. Trail blow-outs are common as are gusty ridgelines. Less often, you might experience rock slides or flash floods.

The state, as well as a number of private websites, offers suggestions as to which trails are suitable for an individual's hiking abilities. Following the recommendations will keep you safe and sound.
