Winter Sports Fun at a Lake Tahoe Ski Resort
Enjoy some of the finest skiing on the West Coast when you ski Lake Tahoe.
While some winter sports aficionados are partial to skiing in the Rockies, each year thousands upon thousands of skiers choose a Lake Tahoe ski resort as their favorite winter vacation destination.
It's no wonder. The Lake Tahoe area is simply stunning and the lake itself is sparkling and crystal clear. Located along the border of Nevada and California, the Sierra Nevada range is situated to the west of the lake and the Carson range to the east.
Mountain peaks soar to about 10,000 feet above sea level here, making it the ideal place for skiing, snowboarding, and much more. As a matter of fact, Lake Tahoe boasts the largest concentration of ski areas in the U.S.
Most travel guides will divide the area into three separate resorts: North Shore Nevada, North Shore California, and the South Shore.
North Shore Nevada
The closest area to the Reno-Tahoe Airport, the North Shore on the Nevada side is home to Incline Village/Crystal Bay. Here you'll find the Diamond Peak ski resort with nearly 700 ski-able acres and 30 runs, suitable for a variety of skill levels.
This resort is also home to the Snowbomb Terrain Park, eagerly welcoming snowboarders to come and hone their skills at this newly expanded area.
You'll also want to visit Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, with the highest base elevation in the area. Mt. Rose has more than 60 trails and eight lifts that can hoist more than 13,000 skiers per hour to the top of the mountain. Wow!
North Shore California
More commonly known as simply "North Lake Tahoe", this area of the lake region is strewn with wonderful accommodations, great winter sports resorts, fine dining, and much more.
A visit to Squaw Valley is a must. With the most ski-able acres in the Lake Tahoe ski resort area, you'll find that Squaw Valley is spread out over six peaks and allows skiers to explore more than 4,000 acres of open bowl terrain.
The ski school here is one of the best in the area and the whole family can take advantage of lessons, no matter what your skill level. There's also a year-round recreation center that draws huge crowds each day.
Northstar-at-Tahoe is another favorite destination. Visitors to Northstar will experience 70 downhill runs and lots of room for cross-country, tubing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and skating.
South Shore
Beautiful South Lake Tahoe is equally stunning and home to some of the best Lake Tahoe ski resorts. When you're ready to ski Tahoe, check out Heavenly Ski Resort and you'll understand how it got its name. Simply breathtaking, the resort has the highest peaks in Tahoe and nearly 5,000 ski-able acres of snow.
Guests to this area can find trails perfect for children and beginners as well as exciting black diamond runs that will challenge even the most extreme skiers.
When You're Not Skiing…
Most Lake Tahoe ski resorts boast pristine ski villages that provide plenty of off-time and après ski activities. You'll find great restaurants, enticing shops, movie theaters, and many other pursuits to keep you busy if you're a non-skier or just need a day for rest and relaxation.
