Leisure Time Places

Colorado Springs is a Vacation Mecca for All Seasons

Whether you're a snow bunny or a sun-worshipper, you'll enjoy this charming city.

The second largest city in the state of Colorado, lovely Colorado Springs was once a Victorian spa resort but has now assumed its place as one of the best and most interesting tourist areas in the state.

Just an hour-and-a-half east of the Rockies and some of the nation's best skiing, and eighty miles south of the capital city of Denver, Colorado Springs boasts an impressive six million visitors per year.

Colorado Springs Attractions
If you've never considered this city to be a premiere vacation destination, you haven't done your homework!

When many people think of Colorado Springs, they think of the U.S. Air Force Academy, which is actually about 14 miles north of the downtown area. Nonetheless, it's a must see on your trip to the Springs and tours are conducted all year long. Don't miss the magnificent chapel!

The other most popular attraction near the city is Pike's Peak. Named for explorer Zebulon Pike, visitors can reach the top of this peak by automobile or the magnificent cog railway, first opened in 1891.

Once at the top of the 14,110 foot summit, you'll enjoy spectacular views of the Continental Divide, amazing wildlife, and even a restaurant and gift shop. Don't forget your camera!

Garden of the GodsMany visitors make their way to the red rocks of the famed Garden of the Gods, where they can view incredible rock formations in an awe-inspiring setting in a valley at the base of Pikes Peak.

The Visitor and Nature Center there provides guests with interesting and historical information about the Garden as well as a number of films and interactive exhibits. Guided tours of the Garden of the Gods are available only during the summer but the attraction is open all year.

For a truly unique experience, check out Cave of the Winds. Also open year-round, guests visiting this attraction will view 200 million years of geological history in underground rooms and passages that boast towering stalagmites and fragile stalactites.

Fun Activities for All Seasons
You'll never be bored here, no matter when you visit. While some activities are better experienced in the warm weather, many are more appropriate in the winter, and others can be enjoyed year round.

For summer adventure travelers, it's just a short drive from Colorado Springs to an exciting whitewater rafting trip on the Arkansas or Colorado Rivers. Trips can be tailored to rafters of all levels and rafting can be appropriate for the whole family.

Golfing is quite popular in and around the Springs and the comfortable Colorado weather makes it an ideal location for golfing from spring through fall.

How about a Jeep tour? In the winter the top will stay on but you'll still be able to experience the backcountry with visits to a number of natural and historical sites.

Depart at dawn in your hot air balloon, which will take you soaring over the Colorado with views of the Rocky Mountains and other magnificent sights. Enjoy a champagne toast or continental breakfast when you land.

Colorado Springs is also teeming with arts and culture. Visitors can enjoy music, ballet, theater, and museums, no matter what the temperature might be outside.

Planning a Trip
Determine which Colorado Springs activities and attractions are best suited to you and your family and plan a vacation for the appropriate time of year. Remember, the summer is the most crowded time in this city, so if you're flexible, you may enjoy visiting in the spring, fall, or even winter.
